Garrick's novel began life as a popular theater play. Although the plots between the two versions are virtually identical, the tone of the novel is much more sentimental and gloomy. Even when Garrick antics incur the wrath of Ada breaking point, she resorts to insulting the object of his love: real tears of disappointment is all you can handle.

The original game created Prince of Wales Theatre, Birmingham in 1864, where he has been successful enough to be transferred to the Haymarket Theatre in London. It was a great success Edward Askew Sothern the actor, who played the title role, but later came to be associated with another famous actor, Charles Wyndham, often romantic rules with his wife in real life scene as Ada Garrick.
